Shoe Love: The right pair for Every Occasion
Shoes, shoes, and more shoes… it’s not just a fascination, it’s a lifestyle! In fact, one of my first words was "shoes." That’s right, my love for footwear has been lifelong. And now, as a podiatrist, I’ve been lucky enough to combine my passion for shoes with my profession. Every day, I get asked the same questions: “Which shoes are best for me?” or “What shoes should I wear for summer?”.
Shoes are an essential part of our daily lives, and selecting the right pair is crucial not only for style but for foot health too. So, let’s dive into what makes a good shoe, and how you can build a shoe wardrobe that’s both fashionable and functional!

What Makes a Good Shoe? The Essential Features
When recommending shoes, there are a few key features I look out for. A shoe is only as good as its ability to support, protect, and suit your individual needs. Here are some important things to consider:
A Sturdy Heel Counter: This is the part of the shoe that helps lock your heel into place. A shoe with a strong heel counter keeps your foot secure and prevents unnecessary movement that could lead to injury.
Fit is Everything: The shoe should be wide enough or narrow enough to accommodate the natural shape of your foot. A snug, comfortable fit reduces friction, blisters, and even long-term foot issues.
Heel-to-Toe Gradient: The heel should be slightly elevated compared to the toe. This gradient encourages proper posture, balance, and reduces the strain on the front of your foot.
Stability: The shoe should not fold in half or twist easily. This indicates poor structural support and can lead to unnecessary stress on your foot muscles and joints.
Outsole Matching the Activity: Whether it’s hiking, running, or playing netball, each activity requires a different outsole. Hiking shoes, for example, have more rugged lugs to grip uneven terrain, while running shoes focus on cushioning and flexibility. Always pick the right shoe for the job!
Fastening System: Whether it's laces, velcro, or zippers, choosing the right fastening system depends on your personal needs and the level of foot support you require. Some people may need a tighter fit for more active pursuits, while others may prefer ease and convenience.
Shoes for Every Occasion
I always say, you wouldn’t wear high heels to play footy, right? Just like you wouldn’t wear a running shoe for a game of netball. Shoes are built for specific purposes, and selecting the right one for the right occasion is crucial.
Netball Shoes: These are designed for multidirectional movement. The outsole is built differently from running shoes to offer more grip for side-to-side movement, essential for fast pivots and quick stops.
Hiking Shoes: With their sturdy construction and supportive sole, hiking shoes protect your feet from rough terrain and provide necessary arch support.
Running Shoes: If you’re hitting the pavement, running shoes are engineered to provide cushioning, absorb shock, and give you the right alignment for forward motion.
When you’re selecting a shoe, think about the activity you’ll be doing most. A proper shoe wardrobe should cover all your needs, and I can help you build the perfect one!
How Long Should You Keep Your Shoes?
Here’s a fun fact that might surprise you: most of the time, when I ask patients how old their shoes are, they respond with “3-5 years!”. While shoes may look fine from the outside, they lose their structure and support over time, and it’s crucial to replace them regularly.
Everyday Shoes: If you wear a pair of shoes daily, they should be replaced every 6-12 months, depending on the wear and tear.
Occasional Wear: If you wear shoes less frequently, you can stretch out their lifespan. However, they’ll still need to be checked for deterioration, especially in the sole and heel.
Pro Tip: A great way to extend the life of your shoes is to rotate them. If you have two pairs in regular rotation, it helps prevent excessive wear on any one pair, ensuring both last longer.
