Why Injuries Happen: It’s Usually Not Bad Luck

A message from Dr Adam Floreani, Director and Sports Chiropractor at Bayside Sport & Health Clinic.

Most people think injuries happen because something is "weak," "out of alignment," or simply due to bad luck.

While accidents certainly happen, the majority of sporting and everyday injuries are actually much more predictable than most people realise.

One of the most useful ways to understand injury is through a concept called Load vs Capacity.

Think of load as the stress you place on your body. This could be running, lifting weights, playing sport, gardening, chasing the kids around, or even sitting at a desk for long periods.

Capacity is your body's ability to tolerate that stress. It's influenced by factors such as strength, fitness, previous injuries, sleep, nutrition, recovery, stress levels and overall health.

When the load placed on your body is appropriate for your current capacity, your body adapts. Muscles become stronger, tendons become more resilient, and bones and joints become better equipped to handle future demands.

Problems tend to arise when the load exceeds what your body is currently prepared for.

This might look like:

Returning to sport after time off and trying to train at your previous level.

Suddenly increasing your running distance or intensity.

Starting a new gym program and doing too much, too soon.

A busy week at work combined with poor sleep and extra training.

Individually, none of these things are necessarily harmful. But when the demands consistently exceed your body's capacity, tissues can become overloaded, increasing the likelihood of pain or injury.

The Goal Isn’t to Avoid Load

A common misconception is that injured tissues need complete rest.

In reality, most muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints actually need the right amount of load to recover and become stronger.

Our goal isn't to eliminate stress on the body, it's to gradually increase your capacity so you can confidently return to doing the things you enjoy.

Whether that's running your first 5 km, playing Saturday sport, lifting your grandchildren or training for your next marathon, rehabilitation is about building resilience, not avoiding movement.

How We Help

At Bayside, our practitioners work together to identify both sides of the equation:

What loads are contributing to your symptoms?

Where can we improve your body's capacity?

From there, we develop an individualised plan that may include hands-on treatment, strength and mobility exercises, exercise rehabilitation, education and gradual progression back to your goals.

Because when your capacity grows, life becomes a whole lot easier, and your risk of injury becomes a whole lot lower.
