The Transition to Spring

We’re here to keep you moving through it all!
A note from Shae Partington, Exercise Physiologist.
Winter sport is wrapping up, spring is here, and I’ve been reflecting on a pretty big winter of my own.
This year was my first year without playing winter team sport, so I wasn’t quite sure what the season would look like.
What I didn’t expect was how much I would get from being surrounded by such an amazing team and community at Bayside.
From rehab to performance: Shae’s Journey to the Gold Coast Marathon
After hanging up the footy boots at the end of last year following another season-ending injury, I wasn’t quite sure what my next sporting challenge would look like.
Then, on July 5, I lined up for the Gold Coast Marathon after a 10-week training block.
And I definitely didn’t do it alone.
A big part of the reason I ended up on that start line was my good friend, Bayside Run Clubber and client, Marissa Hutchings, who managed to rope me into doing it with her!
For Marissa, it was marathon number four.
For me, it was number one.
I’m incredibly grateful I got to experience that first marathon alongside her.
As an Exercise Physiologist, I knew the importance of managing training load, building strength and capacity, allowing adequate recovery and gradually progressing training.
But putting all of that into practice is another story!
There were great training days, tough sessions, fatigue, niggles and plenty of adjustments along the way. Having someone alongside me made a huge difference.
There were definitely days when motivation was low, but knowing someone else was waiting made it much easier to get out the door.
It also reinforced something I see every day at Bayside:
The people around you can have a huge impact on how you move, train and perform.
Sometimes that looks like:
A training buddy.
Someone who gets you out the door when motivation is low.
A supportive community.
People who make movement something you look forward to.
A team that understands your goals.
People who can help you navigate the process and adjust when things don’t go to plan.
For me, I was lucky enough to have all three.
And now, on the other side of the journey, it’s been pretty special to be able to help others with theirs.
Whether that’s supporting someone through rehab, helping an athlete prepare for their next season, or simply getting people moving at Run Club, I’ve realised that the best part of what we do at Bayside isn’t just seeing people get stronger or fitter.
It’s being part of the journey.
And sometimes, having someone in your corner is what makes all the difference.

6 Months of Bayside Run Club
Which brings me to Run Club.
Six months of Friday mornings!
We’ve had runners, walkers, kids, grandparents, dogs, first-timers and experienced runners showing up week after week.
And we’ve made it through the coldest, darkest part of the year.
The best part?
It hasn’t been about pace.
It’s been about getting people moving, meeting new people, having a laugh and grabbing a coffee afterwards.
For some people, it’s training.
For others, it’s simply getting out of bed and moving before the day begins.
And that’s the point.
Movement doesn’t have to look the same for everyone.
Six months in, it’s been pretty cool to see what happens when people simply keep showing up.

Winter Sport… What’s Next?
As winter sport wraps up, it’s also a great time for athletes to take a breath before jumping straight into the next training block.
Reflect on the season.
Think about what you want to improve.
And work out what you need to do to get there.
Our Athlete Benchmark Assessment can help take some of the guesswork out of that process.
Using objective testing, we can look at things such as:
• Strength
• Power
• Movement quality
• Left-to-right differences
• Physical capacity
The goal isn’t simply to get a score.
It’s to understand where you’re starting from, identify opportunities and give you something to build from.
Test → Understand → Plan → Progress.
Whether you’re preparing for next season, returning from injury or simply wanting to know what you’re capable of, having a baseline can make the next step much clearer.

Community in Motion: The Wins that Matter
One of my favourite parts our Clinical Group Exercise is watching people realise what they’re capable of.
Recently, one of our clients said:
“Coming to these classes has been the best decision I have ever made. I didn’t realise how strong I am and how much better I feel. It feels like a family.”
That’s a pretty special outcome.
Our groups have a maximum of six people, which means everyone has an individualised program while still getting the motivation, encouragement and connection that comes from exercising alongside others.
And the wins aren’t always about lifting more weight.
Sometimes they’re:
“I can do that now.”
“I feel stronger.”
“I’m more confident.”
“That doesn’t hurt anymore.”
“I actually look forward to coming.”
Different goals.
Different abilities.
Same community
Spring is Here
A change of season doesn’t mean you need to completely overhaul your routine.
Instead, think about what you’d like to be able to do over the next few months.
Maybe it’s:
• Getting back to running
• Building strength
• Preparing for summer sport
• Walking further
• Managing a niggle
• Getting outside more
• Feeling more confident in the gym
• Finding an exercise environment that works for you
Whatever it is, start where you are and build from there.
At Bayside, we take an evidence-based, individualised approach to helping people move better, build capacity and work towards the things that matter to them.
From Exercise Physiology and Physiotherapy to Chiropractic, Podiatry, Massage, Myotherapy, Acupuncture, Recovery and our Clinical Exercise Classes, our multidisciplinary team is here to support you at every stage.
From recovery to performance, we’re here to keep you moving
