Why Rest Isn't Always Best

Sometimes it’s not that you need more rest…

You just need a different plan.

Have You Tried This Before?

  • Taking time off.

  • Skipping certain exercises.

  • Avoiding movements that irritate it.

  • Hoping it will just “settle.”

And maybe it does… temporarily?

But then you return to training properly… and the pain comes back.

Here’s Why That Happens

Rest CAN reduce symptoms. But it doesn’t rebuild capacity.

When an area isn’t loaded for a period of time:

  • Strength drops

  • Tendons lose stiffness

  • Conditioning declines

  • Confidence reduces

So when you go back to your usual training or activity, your body simply isn’t prepared for that level of demand yet.

This Is Where Most People Get Stuck

You rest → feel a bit better → return to activity → pain returns → repeat.

It’s frustrating, and it feels like you’re doing the “right” thing…but you’re missing a key piece: Progressive, structured loading!

What Recovery Should Actually Look Like

Recovery isn’t about stopping. It’s about adapting and rebuilding.

A good rehab or training plan should:

  • Modify load with purpose

  • Gradually reload the injured area

  • Rebuild strength (often beyond pre-injury levels)

  • Prepare you for the demands of your sport or lifestyle

Because your body doesn’t need protecting forever…It needs preparing!

The Key Takeaway

Load isn’t the enemy. Unprepared load is!

The goal isn’t just to feel better, it’s to be strong enough to stay better.
